First, we studied the vocabulary of the human body in detail.
Then, without the pupils knowing, we took pictures of them as they were sitting in class. We showed them the photos to make them aware of the way they sit. After that, we worked on an authentic scientificillustrated article (extract from Washington Post) to discover all the troubles people can have in different partsof their body if they remain sitting for too long in a bad position. We defineddifferent categories of troubles: organ diseases, muscle degeneration, leg disorders, trouble at the top of the body (brain, neck) and bad back. They found the main problem in each part of the text, they noted down what happensin the body, and found different simple solutions to protect their body and remain in good health.
The basic idea is: upright posturetones muscles, facilitates breathing, which, in turn, accounts for more oxygen delivered to the brain and the organs. Besides that, it improves one’simage, giving the aura of assertiveness and making one more attractive.
We then showed the students pictures of different people and they had to decide if their postures were correct or not.
They also made short videos correcting friends’ sitting postures.
It really made the students aware that as they remain seated at school for more or less 7 hours each day, it is very important for them to adopt good postures. We made the link with sitting on the sofa watching the television, or working on the computer or playing video games on the console. It gave them tools for stretching and moving without sores.
They will be reminded constantly by teachers about the benefits of keeping the correct posture and avoiding slouching. They will advise their friends how to eliminate bad habits and will make them aware of the advantages of improving their body posture. They practised some exercises.
At first, the students were unsettled because the activity was carried out in English and the text was authentic and rich, but they finally enjoyed that activity after being helped with the vocabulary.
